Merchants bear responsibility for patrons

From my vantage point, I think that the young customers who frequent Petrock’s Bar & Grille in Hillsborough are very responsible when they are here. They seem to be aware of their alcohol consumption levels, and seem to appoint a designated driver in a group. Usually, this designated individual will drink soda or water and takes this role very seriously.

I think this initiative of raising awareness about the dangers and consequences of young adults drinking and driving is among one of the most important issues out there. I believe making young people aware of the dangers drinking and driving is important to preventing accidents and fatalities.

I think that a strong foundation at home starts a young adult on a good path. Parents should serve as role models for their children. If children see parents acting responsibly, generally children will follow that lead. In addition, parents need to take the issue alcohol and driving very seriously. A frank discussion should be given about the dangers of driving and drinking.

It’s always fun to relax and socialize with friends and family. By planning ahead and assigning the role of designated driver to a responsible adult, the evening will end safely. Even though there is a driver who is taking the wheel, it is always a good idea for all adults to act like adults and not become so incapacitated that they are not aware of a situation.

Sometimes, a person may find themselves in a situation that wasn’t planned. At my bar, we stop serving a person once they appear to be losing their ability to make sound decisions about drinking alcohol. If a person finds themselves unable to drive, they should call a friend or family member for a ride home.

It’s unfortunate that Hillsborough does not have public transportation, and there are no local taxis that are available after 11 p.m. It is up to local restaurant and bar owners to be vigilant in knowing when their patrons have had too much to drink.

I am very happy to be a part of this important advisory panel. I think that by raising awareness and offering guidance to young people, it makes our streets safer for everyone.

The event of April 28 at Raritan Valley Community College in Branchburg is a great way to reach young adults and teens.

This community forum from 6 to 8 p.m. will offer wonderful speakers and educational resources to help our community. Individuals in the 18-to-25 year old range have a great future ahead of them; this community forum will provide the resources and education to help them reach it.
