EmPoWER Somerset Encourages Effective Prevention
The family fun day at the Far Hills races can be a bonding experience for the community and raises millions of dollars for a good cause; however, race day typically brings more than just family fun. There can be negative consequences from excessive alcohol consumption including arrests and individuals in need of emergency medical care and transport to area hospitals. Through a partnership between Bernardsville Chief Kevin Valentine and Bernardsville resident Sharon Lutz, Executive Director of EmPoWER Somerset, the Bernardsville Police Department had a little help in keeping the community safe this year on race day. EmPoWER Somerset provided the Borough of Bernardsville with a check for $1,000 at their scheduled meeting on Monday October 25th specifically to help with the cost police overtime to keep all the residents safe while enjoying all that the community has to offer.
Sharon Lutz, stated " EmPoWER Somerset is grateful to have such a hard-working police force that is engaged in the community. This effort has been a long time coming. Chief Valentine has met with EmPoWER Somerset over several months to identify ways that the police force can partner with the local community including schools."
According to Chief Valentine, "The Bernardsville Police Department is pleased to partner with EmPoWER Somerset in securing extra police protection in Bernardsville on the day of the Far Hills Races. This funding will enable the Police Department to better respond to alcohol related incidents that historically occur on Race Day. The grant will ensure that the Bernardsville Police Department has a strong presence on this day in an effort to prevent any unfortunate incidents."
EmPoWER Somerset also commends the Race Meeting Association for implementing updated guidelines and encouraging a family atmosphere at this year?s event; such enforcement of the minimum drinking age, banning drinking games, and adding a kid-friendly family area. These are critical steps in increasing the safety and well being of all who attend the event as well as residents of the surrounding communities.
