Bernardsville Police Receive Grant From EmPoWER Somerset

The Bernardsville Police Department received a $1,000 grant from EmPoWER Somerset, a Somerville-based organization that focuses on the prevention of substance abuse, addiction and related problems, to help with overtime costs associated with patrolling the borough during the Far Hills Race Meeting on Saturday, Oct. 23.

“The Bernardsville Police Department is pleased to partner with EmPoWER Somerset in securing extra police protection in Bernardsville on the day of the Far Hills races,” Police Chief Kevin Valentine said. “This funding will enable the police department to better respond to alcohol-related incidents that historically occur on race day.

“The grant will ensure that the Bernardsville Police Department has a strong presence on this day in an effort to prevent any unfortunate incidents.”

Sharon Lutz, a borough resident and EmPoWER Somerset’s executive director, was on hand at the Borough Council meeting Monday, Oct. 25, to present a check to the borough specifically earmarked for the police department.

“EmPoWER Somerset is grateful to have such a hard-working police force that is engaged in the community,” Lutz said. “This effort has been a long time coming. Chief Valentine has met with EmPoWER Somerset over several months to identify ways that the police force can partner with the local community, including schools.”

EmPoWER Somerset also commended the Race Meeting Association for implementing updated guidelines and encouraging a family atmosphere at this year’s event by enforcing the minimum drinking age, banning drinking games and adding a kid friendly family area.
